Bear vs. Shark is from the college town of Ann Arbor, Michigan (near Detroit ). Their music is what many would label as emo or indie rock. Their songs range from the soft and dreamy "Bloodgiver" to more hardcore tracks such as "Campfire" and "Michigan." Even though Bear vs. Shark can get soft, all of their songs possess an exciting, live feel.
Their first and only CD so far, Right Now You're in the Best of Hands kicks off with the fast-paced, time-changing "Ma Jolie." This song starts the album with a punch, packing a variety of feelings into one song, then ends gently. Highlights of this disc include the joyful "Buses/No Buses,"
"Michigan," and especially "Bloodgiver," a soothing, slow-paced ballad.
Bear vs. Shark's sound is characterized by crunchy guitars, creative bass lines and a crazy, yet impressively talented singer. Their music flows very smoothly and sounds thrown together, but in a good way. You won't find any Eddie Van Halen solos on Best of Hands but you will find some refreshingly tasteful pop rock. These guys don't sound like a lot of the "cute skater boy" garbage that's been passed of as indie rock on MTV lately.
The band is currently touring the United States and Canada. Tour dates, their new CD and even a few high-quality, downloadable songs are available at bearvsshark.com. If you want to hear some upbeat, high-energy rock with a different sound, turn to Bear vs. Shark.
