With a mix of powerful rock and roll riffs, deep down soulful vocals and slamming drums, Girl Kicks Boy has a taste of something to feed anyone’s musical appetite. Their sound is clean, crisp and very refreshing. Completely original, this Arizona local band is heading on to bigger and better things.
With Stacey Funk on vocals, rhythm guitar and harmonica. A Nebraska native with the spirits of the most soulful and powerful female vocalists from beyond our time coursing through her veins. Her voice has a unique, natural raspy-ness to it that gives her a sound of the likes of Janis Joplin. Lead guitarist Rob Bass hails from Citrus County, Cali and draws heavily on the influences of the blues greats like Vaughn and Hendrix, but his preferred rock and roll side shines through. Holding down the bottom end is Soraya Dominguez on the bass, an Arizona local with a daring instrument and the chops to match. Hometown hero Steve Olson’s aggressive drums keep it all together and are essential to a high energy GKB show.
The lyrics are a power of their own. With the inspirational lyrics in “Perfect Day”, to the heart felt song, “Home”, that deals with the struggles of times changing gives GKB a deeper feeling. Stacey’s natural grasp on reality and being able to translate it in to poetry flowing songs give GKB a step up from the normal everyday band. Their rock and roll sound mixed with the emotions of every day life give the band an emotional feeling, with out the “emo” sound.
Girl Kicks Boy is definitely a band on the rise. With the award for “Best Female/Female Fronted Band” at the 2003 AZ SKA/PUNK AWARDS, GKB has gotten a lot of notice in Arizona. Gaining momentum with no signs of slowing down, GKB is headed in the right direction. Seems to me this band will be one of the next big things! So look out for Girl Kicks Boy because soon, they just might kick your town!
