ALBUM REVIEW:

Artist: Emery
Album:The Weak's End
Label: Tooth and Nail Records
Rating:
Reviewer: Chad Malone

In the era of hardcore rock where bands like Thrice, Thursday, and Story of the Year are beginning to take over the airwaves with their in-your-face screaming lyrics and melodic death metal guitar riffs, Emery fits in with the ranks of the best. Or at least they will when their CD "The Weak's End" hits stores next month.

Emery continues forth down the path of emotionally draining songs. The lead singer rips you apart with his screaming vocals, and the rest of the band put you back together with their hard, yet soothing metal sound. Their sound is perfect for the timing they are entering the music game. But after listening to the CD enough times, I'm not sure if this band has what it takes to stand the test of time.

I have to admit, this CD doesn't really set itself apart from others in its genre, but it just gives us more to listen to. After listening to this album a few times, the songs that resinate with me the most are "Bloodless" and "The Secret." The CD only had 10 songs on it that went relatively fast, but I was only able to listen to the advance copy, so there's a chance that they'll sneak another song or two on it before they put it out in stores.

The Weak's End is an album with a tragic edge to it. Every song on the CD seems to have a melodramatic overtone to it. Even the song titles are a bit overwhelming (especially "Disgusing Mistakes With Goodbyes.") Granted this probably isn't the best choice if you are looking for music to put you in a good mood (if thats the case, I suggest Junior Senior.)

I think that Emery has a very good chance of hitting the mainstream with this CD, or at least creating a huge fan following, moreso than they have now. If you are looking for some new bands, and you like the aforementioned hardcore rock bands, you'll definitely want to pick up Emery's CD coming out on January 27th, 2003.
