The rock scene is flailing with sub-genres arguing amongst themselves. Bands are more concerned with looking scene than learning how to actually play their instruments and write songs well. The hardcore scene has been growing increasingly stagnant with the same drums beats, distorted power chords, and the incomprehensible screams. Enter England. England throws the formula in the crapper by ignoring the norms determined by the genre and scenes to present something,
while not without its cliché moments, that brings something new and
creative to the mix.
Coming from the drug and violence ridden city of San Bernardino, CA, England has found another way to vent their oppressed anger. Releasing raw emotion into their already heavy barrage of guitars and vocals, England has tapped into something primal and has released that energy into a sonic assault resulting in a great new face in rock music. They focus on getting the audience involved in the world around them. Being conscience of the world around you isn't exactly a stereotype that
most bands are known for, but England seems to rub it in your face.
Forming in 2003, England has been honing their skills since. The band has been through good times and the bad. After
exchanging drummers and losing a guitarist, the band’s lineup became official and now the current lineup includes Jeff Gaines (guitar/vocals), David Hawkins (Bass), Jason Brannon (drums) and Dylan Watson (guitars/vocals). Even with lineup changes, van breakdowns and empty pockets, England remains positive and productive, recently releasing their first EP, Is a Four Letter Word on Tried and True Records.
The band has been touring, hitting cities all along the west coast. The
touring has spread the word on England, with more and more people checking
out their Purevolume and MySpace profiles
daily. With these new forms of advertising, and the ease of getting your name out, England keeps the interest peaked by giving people what they ask for, without giving everything away.
With multiple singers and three guitarists, it's hard to make out who the "front man" is, but I did get to ask guitarist/singer Jeff Gaines a few quick questions:
TMF Jonathan: How has getting your first ep out been working for you?
Jeff Gaines: It's been great. It really helps to finally have a recording that we can all be proud of and share with people all over the country, and it makes touring a lot easier.
TMF Jonathan: How has touring been on you guys, both individually and as a band?
JG: It's been fun. The only problems we really have is getting enough gas money and the typical van malfunctions. Other than that, each new city brings new experiences, which only helps us grow as a people.
TMF Jonathan: With touring, I'm sure you have seen a lot of bands perform while on tour, have any of the performances just blown you away?
JG: Yeah, three bands really stand out. Clarity Process and The Empty are both from Oregon and they are amazing. A local band we really enjoy are You Are Switzerland. These kids just go crazy every show.
TMF Jonathan: How has the reception been while on tour, have any particular cities or venue been more into your set than others?
JG: One city we all love is Portland. Everytime we go there, we have a
blast. We've met so many new friends there.
TMF Jonathan: Any big plans coming up?
JG: Just a lot of touring.
